Rajkot Updates News: TATA group takes the rights for the 2022 and 2023 IPL seasons: For the upcoming 2022 and 2023 seasons, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has announced a new title sponsor as Vivo has decided to part ways from the association. In their place, Tata Group will be the new title sponsor and will pay Rs 1,124 crore over the next two seasons.
Interestingly, despite Vivo’s decision to separate, they are still bound by their contractual obligations to pay the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Rs 454 crore. Back in 2018, Vivo inked a five-year deal with the IPL, under which they were obliged to pay Rs 484 crore in 2022 and Rs 512 crore in 2023. This contract is valid for five years, and its duration was until 2023. On the other hand, Tata Group will pay a reduced amount of Rs 335 crore for each season but will take on the responsibility of being the title sponsor.

Vivo had pulled out of the IPL title sponsorship in 2020, citing a force majeure clause, as two consecutive IPL seasons were scheduled with a limited audience for six months due to the Covid-19 pandemic. After Vivo exited the IPL title sponsorship in 2020 due to a force majeure clause, citing the COVID-19 pandemic, the BCCI found a replacement in Dream XI, which offered to pay Rs 220 crore. However, Vivo made a comeback as the title sponsor for the 2021 season, which was played in two halves.
Vivo’s previous agreement with the IPL was substantial until 2023, and it required them to pay Rs 440 crore each year. But Vivo reportedly informed the BCCI of its intention to terminate the agreement due to economic conditions. The BCCI considered giving new tenders at first, but they ultimately ruled against it and explored possible replacements.
“The total has changed slightly because there are more games this season. Tata Group, as the title sponsor, will cover most of the expenses, with Vivo covering the remainder, the task fee,” said Brijesh Patel, Chairman of the IPL Governing Council. Despite Vivo’s decision to quit, they are still obligated to pay the BCCI Rs 454 crore for the next two seasons.
